The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has alerted its customers about a recent collapse in its power network, resulting in widespread electricity outage across its service area. The announcement was made through an official statement on the company’s social media platform.
According to the statement, the system collapse occurred at approximately 16:28hrs (04:28 pm). However, EKEDC assured its customers that it is actively collaborating with its partners to expedite the restoration of power supply throughout its operational zone.
The statement from EKEDC reads, “Kindly be informed that there was a system collapse at 16:28 hrs which resulted in the loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored.”
EKEDC is responsible for supplying electricity to the Southern parts of Lagos and the Agbara region of Ogun state. Its service areas encompass key locations such as Lekki, Ibeju, Islands, Orile, Ijora, Apapa, Mushin, Festac, Ojo, Ajah, and Agbara. Despite its crucial role, the company receives only about 11% of the electricity supplied to the national grid.
Notably, system collapses from Distribution Companies (Discos) or the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) are not uncommon occurrences in Nigeria’s electricity sector. The recent incident exacerbates the ongoing leadership disputes within EKEDC. Earlier reports indicated the dismissal of the company’s CEO, Dr. Sanda Tinuade, following a directive from the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Subsequent to her dismissal, the Board appointed Mrs. Rekhiat Momoh as the acting CEO. However, the Legal director of the company has contested this decision, asserting that the sacked CEO remains the Head of the company.
