Google is planning to limit certain election-related responses leading up to the 2024 United States Presidential election as the company intends to enforce these restrictions by early 2024 through its chatbot, Bard.

Beyond the U.S., significant elections are anticipated in 2024, notably in India and South Africa. Google also aims to focus more on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) influences voter engagement and campaign support for these elections.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, announced in November that it’s prohibiting political campaigns and ads in regulated sectors from using its new AI-based advertising tools. Moreover, advertisers on Meta platforms must disclose the use of AI or other digital means to modify political, social, or election-related ads on Facebook and Instagram.

Contrarily, Elon Musk’s social media platform X, under investigation by the European Union, revealed plans in August to allow political advertising from U.S. candidates and parties. This move comes with an expansion of its safety and election teams in preparation for the upcoming U.S. election, overturning its global ban on political ads since 2019.

Governments worldwide are pushing for AI regulation due to concerns like misinformation. The European Union is implementing new rules that require Big Tech companies to clearly label political ads, specify the sponsor and cost, and identify the targeted elections on their platforms.
