Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Tibco’s Chargify to introduce a substantial network of 127 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country.
According to analysts, the initiative marks a significant stride in South Africa’s commitment to fostering sustainable transportation solutions.
MBSA, a key player in the EV market, pledged R15 million towards the first phase and R25 million for the subsequent phase of this ambitious rollout. The primary objective is to not only incentivize the adoption of EVs among individuals but also to provide existing customers with convenient access to a reliable charging infrastructure.

South Africa has witnessed a remarkable surge in EV usage, positioning itself as a frontrunner in EV sales across the African continent, with a staggering 127% growth recorded in 2022. This strategic investment aims to meet the burgeoning demand and facilitate the transition toward sustainable mobility solutions.
The implementation will commence with the installation of 67 Mercedes-Benz EQ charging stations nationwide by Q1 2024 with a focus on erecting an additional 60 stations, strategically positioned in key areas, ensuring comprehensive coverage and accessibility.
Chargify, in collaboration with MBSA, is deploying AC and fast-charging DC stations across vital expansion sites such as the airports, retail centers, restaurant hubs, private hospitals, residential estates, small towns, and major interconnecting routes between metropolitan areas to create a seamless network that caters to diverse consumer needs and travel patterns.

Mercedes-Benz already boasts a diverse range of EVs in South Africa, including the EQ and EQ AMG models. The existing EQ-branded charging station infrastructure is present in select locations, such as Silvermist Wine Estate in Hout Bay, Highwaymans Garage in Pilgrim’s Rest, Da Vinci Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg, and Champagne Castle in the Drakensberg. This expansion reinforces their commitment to facilitating convenient and accessible charging options for EV users nationwide.
