Meta is initiating another wave of layoffs, following significant cuts in recent years. After eliminating 11,000 positions in 2022 and an additional 10,000 in 2023, the company has begun reducing its workforce across various teams, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Threads. However, this latest round of cuts is expected to involve a smaller number of employees.
Jane Manchun Wong, a Meta employee, shared her experience on Threads after being informed of her layoff. “I’m still trying to process this, but my role at Meta has been impacted,” she wrote. “Thank you to everyone, especially my Threads and Instagram teammates, for my wild journey at Meta. If anyone is interested in collaborating, particularly in software or security engineering, please reach out via my email or LinkedIn, as noted on my personal website.”
A Meta spokesperson, Dave Arnold, explained, “Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources align with our long-term strategic goals and location strategy.” He added that the restructuring may involve relocating some teams and transitioning certain employees to different roles. “In situations where a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for impacted employees,” Arnold stated. The exact number of layoffs remains unclear, as Meta has not disclosed this information.
In March 2023, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized the company’s commitment to operating more efficiently, asserting that a leaner organization would enhance productivity and overall job satisfaction. “A leaner org will execute its highest priorities faster,” he noted.
