Microsoft co founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence has become powerful enough to enable events that could result in catastrophic loss of life if the technology falls into the hands of people with malicious intentions. Gates made the warning in an interview with NBC News, where he argued that the combination of increasingly capable AI systems and harmful human intent could create risks on an unprecedented scale.

Gates said AI could potentially be used to facilitate large scale cyberattacks and other forms of serious harm, making the technology a growing security concern alongside its economic and social benefits. His comments come amid increasing debate among technology leaders and researchers about the risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems and whether existing safeguards are sufficient to manage them.

The Microsoft co founder also argued that voluntary measures by technology companies would not be sufficient to address the risks. He called for governments, lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to participate in establishing safeguards and monitoring requirements for advanced AI systems. According to Gates, mandatory oversight could impose additional responsibilities on technology companies without necessarily bringing AI development to a halt.

Gates’ warning adds to a broader global conversation about how governments and the technology industry should manage the rapid development of artificial intelligence. While AI continues to create opportunities in areas such as business, healthcare, education and productivity, concerns about cybersecurity, biological risks, misinformation and misuse are increasingly shaping discussions about responsible development and regulation.
