WhatsApp has emerged as the most widely installed messaging application on Nigerian smartphones, with the platform found on 95 per cent of devices surveyed in a recent Nigeria Smartphone Study. The figure places WhatsApp significantly ahead of other messaging platforms and highlights its growing importance in the country’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.

According to the study, Facebook Messenger was installed on 32 per cent of the smartphones surveyed, while Telegram recorded 27 per cent. The overwhelming presence of WhatsApp reflects how deeply the platform has become embedded in everyday communication in Nigeria, serving individuals, businesses, organisations and public institutions as a major channel for exchanging information and maintaining contact.

Beyond personal messaging, WhatsApp has increasingly become a tool for digital commerce and business engagement. Small businesses and entrepreneurs use the platform to advertise products, communicate with customers, receive orders and provide customer support, while professionals and organisations also rely on it for networking and information sharing. Its widespread adoption therefore gives businesses an immediate channel through which they can reach a large proportion of digitally connected Nigerians.

The findings also point to the growing influence of mobile platforms on Nigeria’s digital economy. As smartphone ownership expands and more economic activities move online, platforms with extensive user penetration are likely to play an increasingly important role in commerce, communication and access to digital services. For Nigerian businesses and technology developers, the scale of WhatsApp usage demonstrates the importance of understanding where users already spend their digital time and how those platforms are shaping the country’s online economy.
