The Federal Government has launched Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod, known as the Manu Tech UniPod, at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, as part of efforts to promote innovation, manufacturing, entrepreneurship and job creation. The initiative is a partnership involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and the Abia State Government.

Speaking at the inauguration on behalf of Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa, said the facility would transform Nigerian universities into centres for research, technology transfer, enterprise development and product commercialisation. He explained that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of building a one trillion dollar economy by 2030 through investments in innovation, industrialisation and youth skills development. Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, also described the project as a major boost to the state’s growing reputation as a manufacturing and industrial hub, noting that it would equip young people with the skills required to compete in regional and global markets.

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the UniPod is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application by bringing together students, researchers, innovators, manufacturers and investors within a single innovation ecosystem. The facility will focus on key areas including artificial intelligence, industrial automation, advanced manufacturing technologies, digital design, agro processing, product prototyping and commercialisation to support enterprise growth and strengthen Nigeria’s industrial value chain.

The Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Education, Mr Ilharo Attah, said the project supports the Renewed Hope Agenda by promoting industrial competitiveness, innovation and youth empowerment. He added that the Federal Government would continue collaborating with TETFund, the United Nations Development Programme, universities and industry stakeholders to establish similar innovation hubs across the country and position Nigerian universities as drivers of research, enterprise and sustainable economic development.
