A Nigerian clean technology startup, D’Olivette Labs, has won a $200,000 international development prize for its innovation in converting organic waste into useful energy and agricultural products. The award, known as the Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development, recognises initiatives that contribute to sustainable development, with the startup’s technology demonstrating how innovation can address environmental challenges while creating economic value.

The startup’s solution uses artificial intelligence powered biodigesters to process organic waste into clean cooking gas, electricity and fertiliser. The technology offers a potential alternative to conventional waste disposal methods while helping households, farmers and businesses derive practical benefits from materials that would otherwise be discarded. Its approach also connects digital innovation with the growing demand for cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

The recognition highlights the opportunities available to Nigerian technology companies developing solutions tailored to local development needs. With waste management, energy access and agricultural productivity remaining significant challenges, technologies that combine digital intelligence with practical infrastructure could open new markets for startups. However, the wider impact of such innovations will depend on their affordability, accessibility and ability to operate effectively across different communities.

For Nigeria’s technology ecosystem, the award also draws attention to the importance of supporting homegrown innovations beyond the early stages of development. Access to funding, technical expertise, infrastructure and strategic partnerships will be critical to expanding the reach of solutions such as D’Olivette Labs’ biodigesters. Wider adoption could strengthen the connection between technology entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability and economic development while demonstrating the potential of Nigerian startups to develop solutions with international relevance.
