A Nigerian geospatial technology company, Milsat Technologies, has played a major role in the development of the country’s new digital postcode system after mapping more than 65 million properties as part of preparations for the national digital census.

The mapping exercise, carried out using geospatial technologies, is expected to provide more accurate location data for properties and communities across Nigeria. Beyond supporting the census, the digital postcode infrastructure could improve logistics and delivery services, emergency response, urban planning, public service delivery and the ability of businesses and government agencies to identify and reach specific locations.

The development highlights the growing role of Nigerian technology companies in providing digital infrastructure for national development. By converting physical locations into structured digital information, geospatial technology can help address longstanding challenges associated with informal addressing systems and make location data more useful for government planning and private sector services.

The digital postcode initiative also demonstrates how locally developed technological capacity can support large scale public sector projects. As Nigeria continues to expand its digital economy, the availability of reliable location data could become an important foundation for e commerce, fintech, telecommunications, transportation and other technology driven services that depend on accurate addresses and location intelligence.
