Niger State has introduced a major change in how it manages its technology and digital economy, replacing its Ministry of Communications Technology and Digital Economy with a new agency. The newly created Niger State Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency is expected to drive digital projects more efficiently and reduce the delays often associated with government ministries. The move reflects the state’s effort to speed up its digital transformation and deliver results more quickly.

Under the new structure, the former commissioner, Sulaiman Isah, now serves as Director General of the agency. He explained that the ministry system was too slow for the fast moving tech space, and that the new agency model will allow for quicker decisions and better execution. This approach follows a growing trend among Nigerian states that are adopting more flexible systems to manage digital development.

The agency has been given broad responsibilities, including shaping policies, implementing digital strategies, and regulating ICT activities within the state. It will also focus on building infrastructure, improving digital skills, and supporting innovation through tech hubs and startup programmes. In addition, it will oversee the development of e government platforms to make public services more accessible and efficient for citizens.

With its own legal backing and funding structure, the agency is designed to operate with a level of independence and flexibility. It will also have the power to form partnerships, issue guidelines, and enforce compliance where necessary. For Niger State, this shift is more than just a structural change, it represents a new way of thinking about technology, one that focuses on action, innovation, and long term growth.
