Canada’s privacy watchdog has expanded an ongoing investigation into social media platform X following reports that its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, was involved in the creation of non consensual sexually explicit deepfake content. The move demonstrates the growing regulatory concern over the misuse of generative AI tools and their impact on personal privacy.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Canada’s Privacy Commissioner, Philippe Dufresne, said the expanded probe would examine how personal information may have been collected, used or disclosed in connection with the alleged deepfakes. He also announced the launch of a separate but related investigation into xAI, the artificial intelligence company behind Grok.

The development adds to mounting global scrutiny of AI powered platforms, particularly around consent, data protection and the spread of synthetic media. Regulators in several countries are increasingly focused on whether companies deploying generative AI systems have adequate safeguards to prevent harm and protect individuals’ rights.

Neither X nor xAI immediately responded to requests for comment, but the investigations signal that Canadian authorities are prepared to take a more assertive stance as AI tools become more widely accessible and powerful.
