Amazon is introducing a new AI-powered feature on Prime Video called “Video Recaps,” designed to help viewers quickly catch up on past seasons of their favorite shows. The tool uses generative AI to produce polished, theatrical-style recap videos complete with narration, dialogue, and music. The feature begins rolling out in beta for select Prime Video Originals, including “Fallout,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” and “Upload.”

This move builds on last year’s “X-Ray Recaps,” which offered text-based AI summaries of episodes and full seasons. While text summaries have become fairly common across digital platforms, Amazon is now venturing into more immersive territory with video-based catch-ups. The company says its models include guardrails to prevent accidental spoilers, though it remains to be seen how viewers will respond to deeper AI involvement in their viewing experience a shift that may feel helpful to some and intrusive to others.

Prime Video is not alone in exploring generative AI for consumer entertainment. YouTube TV already uses AI to generate “Key Plays” for sports broadcasts, helping late viewers catch up quickly, a feature that even earned the platform a Technical Emmy. Netflix, meanwhile, has been integrating generative AI on the production side, using the technology in shows like “The Eternaut,” “Happy Gilmore 2,” and “Billionaires’ Bunker” to speed up visual effects, concept development, and de-aging techniques.

The rise of AI in streaming continues to spark industry-wide debate. Many creatives remain worried about how generative models often trained without artists’ consent could threaten jobs and artistic ownership. Others argue that AI can reduce repetitive production tasks and expand what teams can accomplish within the same time and budget. As Amazon’s Video Recaps rolls out, it becomes the latest example of how generative AI is steadily reshaping both how content is created and how audiences experience it
