The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has distanced itself from a viral online video claiming it is partnering with a company to deliver petrol to motorists through dispatch riders. The refinery told our correspondent on Sunday that it has no link to the footage and does not know its source. The video, which circulated widely, showed a man avoiding fuel queues by ordering petrol via WhatsApp and receiving it from a rider using a mini fuel dispenser mounted on a motorcycle.

The advert, tagged ‘FuelUp’, claimed the initiative was powered by ‘Dangote Petroleum’, prompting mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some viewers described the concept as innovative, others raised safety concerns over the delivery method. Dangote officials, however, dismissed the video outright. The Group Chief Communication Officer, Anthony Chiejina, described the material as “fake”, stressing that the refinery is not associated with any such service. Another official added that the refinery supplies fuel only to bulk buyers and has not signed any agreement with any company to sell petrol through bikes.

The development comes months after the refinery rolled out its direct fuel distribution scheme using hundreds of newly imported Compressed Natural Gas-powered trucks. Dangote is also executing a major expansion programme that will scale up the facility’s refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. Located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, the refinery is among the largest integrated refining complexes globally.

As part of its long-term strategy, the company has been integrating modern technologies to optimise operations, improve environmental compliance, and strengthen logistics infrastructure. These ongoing enhancements are designed to boost domestic supply, deepen regional energy integration, and position the refinery as a leading player in Africa’s oil and gas landscape
