Electric vehicle maker Rivian is making design changes to the door handles of its upcoming R2 SUV following safety concerns raised by both employees and customers. According to Bloomberg, the automaker will now reposition the manual emergency door releases to be more visible and accessible, placing them closer to the electrically powered handles. The R2 SUV is expected to hit the market next year.
The decision highlights growing scrutiny of electronic door handle systems, which many automakers have embraced in pursuit of sleeker looks and improved aerodynamics. However, these designs often hide manual releases in less obvious spots, raising risks during emergencies. Rivian’s redesign aims to address such concerns and reassure potential buyers about the safety of its vehicles.
The move comes as rival automakers face similar challenges. Bloomberg recently reported multiple cases of Tesla drivers and passengers struggling to exit vehicles due to poorly placed manual releases, prompting a federal investigation. Tesla has since pledged to redesign its handles to avoid repeat incidents.
Other carmakers have not been spared either. Earlier this year, Ford recalled and halted sales of its Mustang Mach-E over faulty electronic latches that risked locking passengers inside if the car’s battery failed. Rivian’s proactive step suggests it is determined to avoid similar controversies as competition in the electric SUV segment intensifies.
