Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has revealed that it will not commence overseas sales of its electric vehicles until 2027. The company’s CEO, Lei Jun, made this known during a livestream event on Wednesday, stating that the decision is based on the need to prioritize China’s domestic market, which has seen strong demand for Xiaomi’s newly launched electric vehicles.
Since its debut in December, the SU7 electric sedan has consistently outsold Tesla’s Model 3 on a monthly basis, reflecting growing consumer interest in Xiaomi’s EV offerings. The company’s latest release, the YU7 sports utility vehicle, recorded an impressive volume of orders within the first 18 hours of its launch last week, further strengthening Xiaomi’s position in the highly competitive Chinese EV space.
However, the surge in demand has come with its challenges. Customers who ordered the YU7 have been told they might have to wait over a year before receiving their vehicles. This delay has drawn a wave of backlash on social media, with many questioning the company’s ability to scale up production fast enough to meet growing demand.
In response to concerns about long delivery timelines, Lei Jun acknowledged the issue but offered little detail, only assuring viewers that the company will “strive to ramp up capacity.” As Xiaomi continues to cement its place in the EV market, all eyes remain on how it manages its production capabilities ahead of its 2027 global launch ambition.
