Germany’s data protection commissioner, Meike Kamp, has formally requested that tech giants Apple and Google remove Chinese AI startup DeepSeek from their app stores, citing serious violations of data privacy. According to Kamp, the app illegally transfers users’ personal data to China without ensuring the level of protection required under European Union laws. Despite being given a chance in May to align with EU standards or voluntarily exit the market, DeepSeek reportedly failed to comply.
The commissioner emphasized that DeepSeek’s privacy policy confirms it stores sensitive user data — such as queries and uploaded files — on servers located in China. She further warned that Chinese authorities have sweeping rights to access such data, raising significant concerns about surveillance and privacy breaches. While Google acknowledged receiving the notice and is currently reviewing it, Apple and DeepSeek have yet to comment on the development.
This action follows similar moves in other European countries, where DeepSeek’s operations have attracted increased scrutiny. Italy banned the app earlier this year over insufficient data transparency, the Netherlands barred it from government devices, and Belgium advised officials against its use. In Spain, a leading consumer rights body has asked the national data protection agency to investigate the app’s privacy risks, though no formal ban has been enacted.
DeepSeek gained attention in January for claiming it had created a high-performing AI rival to ChatGPT at a significantly lower cost. However, it has since come under fire in the West over concerns about its affiliations and data handling. The United States is now considering a bill that would prevent federal agencies from using Chinese-developed AI tools, following a Reuters report alleging that DeepSeek is aiding China’s military and intelligence efforts. British authorities also noted they are monitoring the app and will take necessary action if any threats to national security arise.
