Google has unveiled a major overhaul of its Android ecosystem ahead of the 2025 I/O developer conference, introducing smarter, more secure, and personalised features across its devices. Android 16 and Wear OS 6 now feature “Material 3 Expressive,” allowing users in markets like Nigeria to customise their phone and smartwatch experiences with interactive animations and personalised colour themes. Android’s interface redesign was informed by feedback from over 18,000 users, and the updates will first launch on Pixel devices later this year before rolling out to others.
One of the biggest highlights is the integration of Gemini, Google’s advanced AI assistant, into Android Auto, Wear OS, Google TV, and upcoming Android XR smart glasses. On the road, Gemini will help users navigate, translate messages, and summarise information like book reviews or news, all through natural conversation. On smartwatches and TVs, it will offer hands-free assistance and personalised content recommendations, while XR headsets will enable immersive planning experiences using Gemini’s proactive support.
Security and convenience have also taken center stage with the launch of the new “Find Hub,” which consolidates the ability to track devices, tags, and people within one app. It supports ultra-wideband tracking and will soon introduce satellite connectivity for off-grid tracking, with support from major airlines for luggage tracking. In addition, Android’s commitment to safer communication continues with Rich Communication Services (RCS), now delivering over a billion messages daily in the U.S., enabling modern messaging features like high-quality media sharing and group chat enhancements worldwide.
Android 16 further strengthens device security by expanding Google Play Protect’s capabilities with real-time threat detection powered by on-device machine learning. It targets malicious apps that change icons to avoid detection and blocks them before installation. New theft protection features also prevent unauthorised access to OTPs from the lock screen and lock core functionalities if a factory reset is attempted without identity confirmation. These enhancements mark a firmer stance by Google in safeguarding user data as Android continues its global evolution.
