Adobe announced on Thursday that it will integrate image-generation artificial intelligence models from OpenAI and Google into its Firefly app and bring the app to mobile devices. Adobe, known for popular software like Photoshop and Premiere, has been developing its own AI models for Firefly since 2023 to generate images and video clips. The company promises that users of its AI tools will not face legal liability for using the generated content.

In a significant update, Adobe revealed that Firefly users will now have access to OpenAI’s GPT image generation, Google’s Imagen 3, Google Veo 2, and Flux 1.1 Pro, alongside its own proprietary Firefly models. Adobe also plans to introduce models from partners like Pika, Ideogram, fal.ai, Luma, and Runway in the coming months. The decision to incorporate third-party models comes after Adobe expressed its openness to expanding its AI offerings to include external technologies.

Ely Greenfield, Adobe’s Chief Technology Officer for digital media, explained that while many customers rely on Firefly for its commercial safety features, others are keen to experiment with different AI models for tasks like ideation. Adobe is offering these options to provide flexibility across workflows, ensuring users have access to a broader range of tools.

Following the announcement, Adobe shares saw a 1.88% increase in midday trading. Firefly users will be able to seamlessly integrate third-party AI-generated content into Adobe’s other applications, such as Photoshop, and can use the same credit system to pay for these models. However, Adobe did not disclose how the revenue will be divided between itself and the third-party providers.
