Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has introduced a memory feature for its chatbot, Grok, in a move seen as a direct challenge to leading AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The new feature, which is currently available in select countries, allows Grok to remember previous interactions with users—marking a shift toward more personalised and intuitive AI experiences.
For instance, Grok can now recall if a user is vegetarian or prefers sushi when giving recommendations, bringing a more human-like quality to conversations. However, the memory feature has not rolled out across all regions. Notably, users in the European Union and the United Kingdom will not have access to it due to stringent data privacy regulations.
Currently, the feature is in beta mode and accessible via Grok.com and its mobile applications, with future plans to extend its availability to the Grok chatbot on X, formerly known as Twitter. Despite arriving later than similar features offered by rivals, this development reflects xAI’s push to remain competitive in the increasingly crowded AI assistant landscape.
In comparison, ChatGPT’s memory can scan a user’s entire chat history for context, while Gemini maintains always-on memory that adapts based on user style and preferences. While Grok’s feature may be behind the curve, it’s a crucial step forward. Importantly, xAI has emphasised user control—offering the ability to manage what Grok remembers through Data Controls and even delete specific memories directly from the chat interface.
The company described the memory function as “transparent,” assuring users that they can see and manage exactly what Grok knows.
Beyond the technical update, xAI’s move signals a broader ambition to develop an AI assistant that feels deeply personal while maintaining user trust. Users who engage frequently with Grok are expected to benefit the most, as the tool tailors responses based on habitual interactions.
While some may view it as a loyalty test, xAI frames it as a balance between innovation and control. With this memory rollout, Grok officially joins the high-stakes chatbot race—and it now has skin in the game.
