The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited has launched a youth empowerment programme targeting seven states in Nigeria’s North-West region. The initiative aims to equip young Nigerians with advanced technological skills and expand broadband access in underserved areas.
According to NIGCOMSAT, the programme will feature a Space-Tech Hackathon and Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) training, scheduled to take place in Dutse, Jigawa State, from April 7 to 11.
Head of Corporate Affairs at NIGCOMSAT, Aisha Bantam, disclosed that the initiative is designed to engage university students, startups, and local innovators from Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, and Jigawa states.
She noted that the programme aligns with the federal government’s push for digital inclusion and economic growth through technology-driven initiatives. Interested participants are required to register via the official link provided by the agency.
This initiative follows a similar programme launched in the North-East earlier this year. In February, NIGCOMSAT, in collaboration with the Adamawa State Government, hosted a Space-Tech Hackathon in Yola, Adamawa State.
The event, themed “Building Grassroots Innovation in Satellite Technology,” focused on driving economic and social impact through technological advancements. The success of the North-East edition has prompted the extension of the initiative to the North-West region.
Providing more details, NIGCOMSAT Managing Director, Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, explained that the five-day programme will offer participants mentorship and hands-on experience in satellite technologies. She highlighted that the hackathon would enable participants to identify technological challenges, develop innovative solutions, and receive guidance from industry experts. Additionally, the winning team will be enrolled in the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme Cohort 2025 for further development of their projects.
Beyond the hackathon, Egerton-Idehen revealed that 100 youths would receive specialized training on installing VSAT systems, enhancing broadband penetration in remote areas. She emphasized that the certification would improve participants’ job prospects and entrepreneurial opportunities in the ICT sector.
She added that the overarching goal of the programme is to inspire innovation, address community challenges, and reduce youth unemployment across Nigeria. The event will be jointly hosted by NIGCOMSAT Ltd and the Jigawa State Government.
