OpenAI has introduced a new tool, the Responses API, to streamline the development of AI-powered applications. The tool, available at no extra cost, is set to replace the existing Assistants API, which will be discontinued by mid-2026.

The Responses API enables developers to incorporate OpenAI’s built-in tools, allowing AI agents to execute tasks more independently. Unlike its predecessor, the new API provides enhanced flexibility, supporting web search, file search, and computer use functionalities without requiring multiple integrations. These improvements are aimed at making AI deployment smoother and more accessible.
The launch comes amid rising competition in the AI sector, particularly from emerging Chinese firms. Monica, a Chinese AI company, recently introduced Manus, an autonomous AI agent that reportedly outperforms OpenAI’s DeepResearch agent. In addition, Monica has partnered with the developers of Alibaba’s Qwen AI models, expanding its influence in the industry.
To address integration challenges, OpenAI has also released an Agents SDK, helping developers manage single-agent and multi-agent workflows. The company has integrated observability tools to enhance insights into agent performance. With these upgrades, OpenAI aims to solidify its market position as global AI firms continue to innovate at competitive costs.
