For decades, the technology sector has been a driving force in shaping economies and transforming daily life. Once considered a male-dominated industry, or Boys’ club, is now gradually witnessing an increasing presence of women who are not only entering the field but also reshaping its landscape.

While progress has been made, challenges remain, and the path ahead requires continued efforts to foster inclusivity and equity. In commemoration of the 2025 International Women’s Day, Remotework explores the Path and the Journey Ahead for women in Technology across the world.

The historical contributions of women to technology date back to the early days of computing, with pioneers like Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper laying the groundwork for modern computer science. Despite their significant impact, the mid-20th century saw a decline in female participation, reinforcing the perception of technology as a “boys’ club.” However, recent initiatives have sought to reverse this trend, encouraging more women to pursue careers in tech.

According to a 2024 report by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), women now make up 23% of the U.S. tech workforce—an increase from previous years, yet still a stark reminder of the gender gap. This under-representation is not just a matter of statistics; it reflects broader issues of accessibility, workplace culture, and systemic barriers that have historically hindered women’s advancement in technology.

Organizations worldwide have taken steps to address these disparities. In Nigeria, the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC), founded by Oreoluwa Lesi in 2008, has provided technology education to over 26,000 women and girls across multiple states. Similarly, Girls Who Code, a U.S.-based organization, has partnered with major companies such as Accenture and Dell Technologies to create after-school programs and summer camps that equip young girls with essential coding skills.

In Africa, initiatives like Tech Herfrica are focusing on digital and financial inclusion for women, particularly in rural areas. Founded in 2023 by Imade Bibowei-Osuobeni, the organization provides digital literacy training and access to e-commerce platforms, enabling women to leverage technology to improve their economic standing. These programs underscore the transformative power of technology in bridging gender and economic disparities.

Yet, despite these efforts, challenges persist. The same EEOC report highlights that Black and Hispanic workers account for only 7.4% and 10% of the high-tech workforce, respectively, indicating a need for more inclusive recruitment and retention strategies. Women, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, continue to face barriers to career advancement, often struggling to break into leadership roles. A 2024 McKinsey & Company study found that women occupy just 15% of executive positions in tech companies—a stark contrast to the progress made at entry and mid-level positions.

Individual success stories highlight the potential for change. Delphine Donné, Vice President and General Manager at Logitech Personal Workspace Solutions, transitioned into the tech industry at 24 and has since been an advocate for diversity and inclusion. She emphasizes the importance of mentorship and supportive workplace environments in fostering women’s success in technology.

To advance gender parity in tech, continuous learning and upskilling are essential. The rapid evolution of technology demands that professionals remain adaptable, acquiring new skills to enhance their employability and career growth. Women in tech have increasingly turned to online platforms, bootcamps, and certification programs to stay competitive in an industry driven by innovation.

Networking also plays a crucial role in career progression. Organizations like W.TEC and Girls Who Code provide spaces where women can connect, share experiences, and collaborate on projects. Professional networks serve as valuable platforms for mentorship, knowledge exchange, and career opportunities, fostering a sense of belonging in an industry that has long been unwelcoming to women.

Workplace policies that promote inclusivity are equally critical. Flexible work arrangements, equitable pay structures, and comprehensive parental leave policies can create environments where women thrive. The concept of “micro-feminism”—small but significant actions like acknowledging women’s contributions in meetings and advocating for fair pay—has gained traction as a strategy to foster inclusivity. These efforts, while seemingly incremental, contribute to a broader cultural shift in the industry.

Entrepreneurship presents another avenue for women to drive innovation. By leveraging technology, women-led startups are addressing unique challenges, contributing to job creation, and stimulating economic development. Organizations like Tech Herfrica demonstrate how digital tools can empower women in rural communities, allowing them to access markets and financial services previously beyond their reach.

Early exposure to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is fundamental in encouraging young girls to consider careers in technology. Programs such as W.TEC’s technology camps and Girls Who Code’s after-school initiatives introduce girls to coding and digital skills from a young age, building confidence and interest in the field. Educational institutions, in collaboration with tech companies, can further support this pipeline through scholarships, internships, and mentorship programs.

Another critical point is addressing unconscious biases in hiring and promotion is another crucial step toward equity. Companies investing in diversity and inclusion training are better equipped to recognize and mitigate biases, fostering a culture that values diverse perspectives. This is particularly important in emerging fields like artificial intelligence, where biased algorithms can perpetuate gender and racial disparities. Figures like Joy Buolamwini, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, have been at the forefront of advocating for equitable AI development, ensuring that technological advancements do not reinforce existing inequalities.

Policy advocacy is also instrumental in achieving systemic change. Governments play a vital role in shaping the industry through legislation that supports women’s participation in tech. Policies that provide funding for STEM education, enforce anti-discrimination laws, and promote workplace inclusivity can create an environment where women are not just included but empowered to excel.

The media representation and styles of narratives also influences societal perceptions of women in tech. Highlighting female tech leaders and innovators in mainstream narratives can inspire the next generation. Recognitions such as Glamour’s annual celebration of women in various fields serve to amplify success stories, offering role models for aspiring technologists.

Creating safe spaces where women can share experiences and seek mentorship is another step toward fostering a more inclusive industry. Support networks, both online and offline, allow women to navigate challenges collectively and access resources that aid professional growth. Investing in research to understand the unique barriers women face in tech enables organizations to develop targeted solutions that address these challenges effectively.

The road to gender equity in technology is long, but the progress made in recent years signals a promising shift. The rise of women in tech is not just about numbers—it is about dismantling barriers, challenging norms, and reshaping an industry to be more inclusive. As initiatives continue to drive change, and as more women break into leadership roles, the future of technology will be one defined by diversity, innovation, and shared success.
