The Federal Government of Nigeria has resolved the passport printing crisis at the country’s consulates in New York and Atlanta, United States following the installation of new high-tech printers by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Tuesday, as part of a broader digital reform initiative.

The development comes in response to growing concerns from Nigerians abroad over long delays in passport issuance, a situation attributed to outdated and inefficient printing machines. Acting on directives from the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the NIS swiftly procured and deployed modern printing equipment to streamline the process.

Speaking on the deployment, Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Babatunde Alao, reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved service delivery. “The Ministry is committed to innovation and improved service delivery. The installation of these new printers demonstrates our dedication to addressing the needs of Nigerians at home and abroad,” the statement read.

The new passport printers are expected to significantly reduce processing times, eliminating the frustrating delays that many applicants previously faced. With these high-performance machines, passport applicants can now expect a smoother and faster experience at the consulates.

According to the statement, this intervention is part of a wider reform strategy spearheaded by the Ministry of Interior. Other ongoing initiatives include the establishment of the Abuja Passport Personalisation Centre and the expansion of contactless passport solutions across various regions.

The Minister further emphasized that these efforts align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which seeks to enhance the quality of life for Nigerians through efficient governance and technological advancements.

With these reforms gaining momentum, many believe that Nigeria’s passport issuance system is on the path to becoming more seamless and efficient, ensuring that citizens, both at home and abroad, receive better services with minimal hassle.
