Microsoft is placing a $3 billion wager on India’s rise as a global hub for artificial intelligence, aiming to supercharge the nation’s digital economy and position it as an “AI-first” powerhouse.
Announced by Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella during the Microsoft AI Tour, the investment will expand the company’s cloud and AI infrastructure over the next two years, reinforcing India’s status as a leader in technology innovation.
Nadella emphasized that India’s momentum in AI is creating unprecedented opportunities, adding that the investment will ensure the benefits of this growth reach people and organizations across the country. A key part of the initiative includes the establishment of new data centers, with a fourth cloud region scheduled to go live by 2026. According to the CEO the expanded infrastructure is set to drive India’s burgeoning AI-powered startup ecosystem and research advancements.
Alongside infrastructure investments, Microsoft also plans to train 10 million Indians in AI skills by 2030 through its ADVANTA(I)GE India program. In 2024 alone, the initiative trained 2.4 million individuals, with a focus on inclusion—65% of participants were women, and many came from tier two and tier three cities.
Microsoft’s President for India and South Asia, Puneet Chandok, highlighted the program’s mission to bring AI to every corner of society, from classrooms to farms. To further accelerate AI adoption, Microsoft is launching an AI Innovation Network led by its Microsoft Research (MSR) Lab. This network will unite researchers, startups, and businesses to translate cutting-edge AI research into practical solutions.
Partnerships like the one with Physics Wallah aim to transform sectors such as education through personalized learning technologies. Microsoft is also collaborating with SaaSBoomi to support 5,000 startups and 10,000 entrepreneurs, particularly in smaller cities.
This initiative is expected to create 200,000 jobs, attract $1.5 billion in venture funding, and bolster India’s thriving software-as-a-service (SaaS) economy. India’s Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, has praised the initiative as a transformative step toward bridging the country’s digital divide. He highlighted how empowering women and youth with advanced skills is key to building an AI-ready workforce and driving sustainable economic growth.
The Minister said the investment, which he described as ambitious, will not only bolster India’s AI infrastructure but also fuel a nationwide movement to harness AI’s potential for inclusive growth and innovation.
