OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Sora, and developer API services on Thursday encountered a significant outage which lasted over four hours.

Remotework’s Editor in Chief, Bamidele says he experienced error messages while trying to access ChatGPT and Sora during the downtime.

“The disruption which started at 6pm (GMT) continued until services gradually resumed around 10:16pm. It makes it the second major outage for OpenAI’s platforms within the same month.”

OpenAI attributed the outage to an issue with one of its upstream providers but did not provide detailed information. By 10:05 pm the company reported partial recovery for ChatGPT, although some users still had trouble accessing chat history.

The company confirmed that there was a technical glitch in the AI app which has affecting its performance in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Full operational status for Sora was confirmed at 11:16pm with efforts ongoing to resolve any remaining issues. This latest incident follows a similar outage two weeks earlier that lasted approximately six hours. Engineers said the disruption was caused by issues with a newly implemented telemetry service.

Typically, OpenAI services recover within an hour or two, but these recent outages have been notably prolonged. Notably, other platforms that use OpenAI’s API, such as Perplexity and Siri’s Apple Intelligence integration, were reportedly unaffected during the outages, according to their respective status pages.
