The recent passing of 19-year-old South African TikTok star Beandri Booysen has brought renewed attention to progeria, a rare genetic disorder characterized by accelerated aging in children. Her life and online presence have sparked important discussions on several social and traditional media platforms about the condition and the care required for those affected.

Progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, leads to rapid aging, with individuals experiencing symptoms typically associated with old age, such as hair loss, aged-looking skin, joint abnormalities, and cardiovascular issues.

The condition is extremely rare, affecting approximately one in 4 million newborns worldwide, and those diagnosed often have a life expectancy into their mid-teens. Beandri was one of about 200 known cases globally and the last known individual with progeria in South Africa.

Despite the challenges posed by her condition, she amassed over 269,200 followers on social media video blogging app, TikTok, where she shared uplifting and motivational content, aiming to inspire and raise awareness about progeria and other special needs.

The main character in Beandri’s life unarguably is her mother, Bea Booysen, who played a pivotal role in her life, providing unwavering support and ensuring that Beandri was treated as a “normal” child, which Beandri credited for her strength and resilience.

Bea announced her daughter’s passing on a Facebook page dedicated to Beandri, expressing deep sadness and highlighting Beandri’s impact as a symbol of awareness for progeria and other special needs children.

The Progeria Research Foundation (PRF) has been instrumental in raising awareness and supporting research for this condition. Through various social media platforms, PRF has reached over 1 million people, educating the public and connecting families affected by progeria. Beandri’s story has resonated with many, prompting discussions on social media about the challenges faced by individuals with progeria and the importance of support and inclusion. Her legacy continues to inspire efforts to understand the condition better and to advocate for those affected.
