Instagram has launched a new feature that enables users, particularly teenagers, to reset their content recommendations across Feed, Explore, and Reels.

Announced by Meta in a statement on Tuesday, the initiative is aimed at providing safer, more personalized, and age-appropriate experiences for teens on the platform. According to Meta, the goal is to ensure that users, especially young ones, have positive and valuable experiences during their time on Instagram.

The feature allows users to clear their recommended content with a few taps, offering a fresh start in curating their feeds. After a reset, recommendations gradually become personalized again based on the user’s interactions with content and accounts. Instagram also provides an option for users to review their followed accounts and unfollow those sharing unwanted content.

To assist parents in guiding teens, Instagram has collaborated with organization experts Joanna and Clea from The Home Edit. The experts encourage parents and teens to periodically “organize” their Instagram experience, akin to decluttering their homes. This involves assessing and managing content preferences to ensure they align with current interests and needs.

Instagram continues to expand its tools to enhance personalization and safety for teens. Features like “Following Feed,” “Favorites,” and “Close Friends” give teens greater control over their experience by allowing them to prioritize content, manage account visibility, and arrange feeds chronologically. Additionally, stricter rules for age-appropriate content aim to address parental concerns about online safety.

To improve transparency, Instagram has introduced a dedicated page on its Transparency Center, explaining how content rules are applied. This guide according to the company is to help parents and teens understand Instagram’s approach to age-appropriate recommendations, even when potentially sensitive content is shared by someone they follow.
