Abuja – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have strengthened their alliance to tackle internet crimes and other criminal activities of mutual concern to Nigeria and the United States. This renewed collaboration was solidified during a visit by FBI Director Christopher Wray and a team of senior officials to the EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement published by the anti-corruption agency on its X account (formerly Twitter), Director Wray expressed satisfaction with the longstanding relationship between the EFCC and the FBI. He emphasized the necessity of bolstering this partnership in response to evolving criminal threats that impact both nations.

EFCC Chairman Olukoyede expressed his gratitude to the FBI for its ongoing support in capacity-building and technical assistance, which has significantly enhanced the EFCC’s operational capabilities. He underscored the mutual benefits of this partnership and highlighted the importance of collaboration in combating transnational crimes, particularly in the realm of cybercrime.

Olukoyede stressed the need for global law enforcement agencies to unite against common threats and assured the FBI of the EFCC’s commitment to combating cybercrime and addressing emerging challenges like sextortion. “Our alliance with the FBI has been instrumental in advancing our efforts to tackle these complex issues,” he said.

During the meeting, Olukoyede outlined the EFCC’s renewed focus on tackling public corruption and its efforts to stimulate economic growth through the promotion of transparency and adherence to regulations. He highlighted the establishment of a new department, the Fraud Risk Assessment and Control unit, aimed at preventing corruption through proactive measures.

The EFCC Chairman also emphasized the importance of effective public communication in shaping public perceptions of anti-corruption efforts. He highlighted the EFCC’s initiatives in this regard, including the launch of a dedicated FM radio station for public awareness campaigns. “Engaging the public is crucial in our fight against corruption,” Olukoyede noted.

Director Wray commended the EFCC for its proactive stance and assured continued FBI support in various areas. “Strengthening our partnership is essential in addressing the complex and evolving threats we face,” he said.

The FBI delegation included high-ranking officials such as Charles Smith Jnr, Sydney Schaur, Joshua James Moldt, William Michael Miller, Vanessa M. Tibbits, William B. Stevens, Leigha Ramson, Sofie Admire Sosenzweig, and Dr. Jim Oscar. Their visit marks a significant step in reinforcing the collaborative efforts between the EFCC and the FBI to combat global criminal activities.
