OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is expanding to Asia with a new office in Tokyo, Japan. This move signifies their growing focus on the Asian market and the importance of tailoring their technology for different languages.

Having a physical presence in Japan allows them to better understand and influence local regulations and public discourse surrounding AI.

While OpenAI is a major player in the AI field, they face competition from companies like SoftBank’s SB Intuitions, which is developing large language models specifically for Japanese users.

OpenAI is also introducing a new GPT-4 model optimized for the Japanese language. This model offers several advantages, including an improved understanding of Japanese nuances, making it more effective in business settings.

Additionally, OpenAI claims the new model is faster and more cost-effective than its predecessor.Currently, access to the custom GPT-4 model is limited to select Japanese businesses. However, OpenAI plans to gradually open access to all via their API in the coming months.
