Tech giant, Microsoft is establishing a new artificial intelligence (AI) research and development center in London. The company is actively seeking “top talent” for the new hub, with specific details on the number of positions forthcoming. This move comes alongside Microsoft’s significant investment in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, which also has a London office.
“The UK boasts a remarkable pool of AI expertise,” said Microsoft’s AI chief, Mustafa Suleyman, in a blog post. “We plan for a long-term commitment, recruiting the best AI minds to this innovative hub.
“Suleyman, who co-founded DeepMind (later acquired by Google) and led his own AI startup, will oversee the new office led by AI engineer Jordan Hoffmann (formerly of DeepMind and Inflection AI).
The focus of Microsoft AI London will be on developing cutting-edge language models and supporting infrastructure. Suleyman also commended the UK’s cautious approach to AI regulation.
This news aligns with the UK government’s goal of becoming a global leader in AI. Viscount Camrose, the UK’s AI minister, sees the hub as a “vote of confidence” in the country’s AI prowess.
“The UK’s thriving AI sector employs over 50,000 people and contributes significantly to our economy,” he said. “Our pro-innovation approach continues to attract leading businesses and talent.”
Suleyman emphasized close collaboration between the new hub and OpenAI, in which Microsoft has heavily invested. Microsoft’s commitment to OpenAI extends to supporting its CEO during recent leadership challenges.Industry experts view this development as a positive sign for London’s burgeoning tech scene. Russ Shaw, founder of Tech London Advocates, believes it signifies a major vote of confidence from a global tech leader.
“AI is transforming how we work,” said Shaw. “The UK must remain at the forefront of AI research and development to solidify its position as a leading tech hub.”
