The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to deploy surveillance drones in collaboration with key security agencies as part of renewed efforts to enhance intelligence gathering and curb insecurity across the state. The initiative is aimed at strengthening aerial monitoring and improving rapid response to emerging threats in Africa’s largest commercial hub.

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Ayodele Ogunsan, disclosed the plan at a press conference on Monday to mark his first 100 days in office. He explained that the Fund would enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigeria Police Airwing to coordinate air based security operations across the state.

According to Ogunsan, the partnership will facilitate the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, commonly known as drones, to significantly enhance intelligence gathering, coordinated surveillance and rapid response capability. He noted that the adoption of modern aerial technology would strengthen the overall security grid and improve situational awareness in high risk areas.

He stressed that Lagos, widely regarded as Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, requires sustained and strategic investment in security infrastructure to safeguard lives, property and economic activities. Ogunsan maintained that a secure environment remains critical to maintaining investor confidence and sustaining the state’s economic momentum.

Reviewing developments within his first 100 days, the LSSTF boss said the Fund had reinforced its financial base through strategic fundraising and broader stakeholder engagement. He disclosed that 80 operational and patrol vehicles had been added to the state’s security network to improve visibility and response time, with additional units expected in the coming months. He added that new fundraising channels, including crowdfunding initiatives, had been introduced alongside intensified collaboration with private sector organisations and public institutions.

Ogunsan further revealed that a sole donor had committed to constructing a permanent office complex for the Fund, while efforts were underway to repair and restore abandoned Armoured Personnel Carriers for operational use. He also announced plans to roll out statewide training programmes for security agencies to boost professionalism and tactical competence. Reaffirming the Fund’s commitment to transparency and innovation, he said the government would continue to deepen partnerships in pursuit of a safer Lagos under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
