A new app called diVine, backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, is bringing back the beloved six-second looping video format that defined Vine. Launching with over 100,000 restored Vine clips, diVine allows users to view vintage content while also creating and uploading new videos. Unlike mainstream social media apps now flooded with generative AI content, diVine will actively detect and block suspected AI-generated videos to preserve authenticity and human creativity.

The project was developed under Dorsey’s nonprofit “and Other Stuff,” established in May 2025 to fund experimental, open-source projects aimed at transforming social media. Early Twitter employee Evan Henshaw-Plath, known as “Rabble,” led the technical restoration effort, reconstructing Vine’s original archive — once stored as massive, inaccessible binary files — into a new, functional platform. The restored content includes around 150,000 to 200,000 videos from 60,000 original creators, though millions of lesser-known clips, such as K-pop content, were never archived.

Vine creators retain copyright to their original work and can request removals or reclaim their accounts by verifying their identities. Once verified, they can upload new videos or add missing content. To ensure video authenticity, diVine uses verification technology from the Guardian Project, which confirms that uploads originate from real smartphones. The app runs on Nostr, a decentralized, open-source protocol also supported by Dorsey, allowing developers to host their own servers and build compatible apps free from corporate control or venture capital pressures.

Dorsey said diVine reflects his vision for a new generation of open, human-centered platforms that prioritize creativity over algorithmic manipulation. His remarks contrast with Elon Musk’s earlier, unfulfilled promise to revive Vine under X.

Rabble believes diVine will appeal to users nostalgic for the early social web — a time defined by genuine community and creator control rather than AI-generated engagement. Available now on iOS and Android, diVine offers a minimalist, human-first alternative to today’s increasingly automated digital world
