A spokesperson for Meta has said the company is barring political campaigns and advertisers in regulated industries from using its new generative AI advertising products, in order to halt the spread of election misinformation.

Meta, owner of Facebook, the world’s second-biggest platform for digital ads, says it’s advertising standards prohibit ads with content that have been debunked by the company’s fact-checking partners.

The company explained that as it continued to test new Generative AI ads creation tools in it’s Ads Manager, advertisers running campaigns for Housing, Employment, Credit or Social Issues, Elections, Politics, Health related, Pharmaceuticals and Financial Services are barred to use the Generative AI features.

Meta says it believes this will allow a better understanding of the potential risks and help build the right safeguards for the use of Generative AI in ads that are of highly sensitive topics in regulated industries.

Meta had earlier announced that it was starting an expansion of advertisers’ access to AI powered advertising tools which can instantly create backgrounds, image adjustments and variations of ad copy in response to simple text prompts which were initially made available to a small group of advertisers
