OpenAI faced a significant service disruption on Wednesday, affecting ChatGPT, its developer API, and the newly launched video tool, Sora. The outage began around 3:17 PM PT, with OpenAI identifying a fix by 4:55 PM PT and gradually restoring services by 7:00 PM PT.

The downtime coincided with the launch of ChatGPT integration in Apple’s iOS 18.2, which may have contributed to a spike in traffic. Additionally, Sora, introduced earlier this week, experienced overwhelming demand, prompting OpenAI to restrict sign-ups.

The outage occurred during OpenAI’s “12 Days of Shipmas” event, where new features are announced daily.

The root cause of the disruption is still unknown, though it followed a global outage of Meta’s services earlier in the day.OpenAI is working to stabilize its platforms as user demand continues to grow

Meanwhile OpenAI says it will continue to monitor and stabilize its systems to ensure reliable service for its expanding user base.
