Four Nigerian students have been sentenced to jail in the United Kingdom for their roles in a violent street altercation involving knives and a baseball bat in Leicester.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of November 4, 2021, on New Park Street, left a victim with multiple stab wounds, sparking an extensive police investigation.
The Leicester City Police, through CCTV analysis, phone tracking, and assistance from the public, were able to identify the perpetrators. The case proceeded to a six-week trial, concluding in October, with sentencing delivered on November 14. Authorities have expressed gratitude to community members who contributed to solving the case.
The convicted students include Destiny Ojo (21), sentenced to seven years for violent disorder, attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH), and GBH with intent, and Habib Lawal (21), who received five years for similar charges. Ridwanulahi Raheem (21) was handed a three-year sentence for violent disorder and possession of a bladed article, while Joshua Davies-Ero (21) received two years for violent disorder.
A fifth defendant, Justin Asamoah (22), who had earlier pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article, awaits sentencing on November 22. Detective Constable Sean Downey of Leicester Police emphasized the seriousness of the offense, noting, “This incident underscores the grave dangers of violent disorder. It is fortunate the injuries were not more severe or fatal.”
He reiterated the force’s commitment to public safety and the necessity of addressing violent behavior in communities.
