Nairobi-based biogas technology company, Sistema.bio, has secured $15 million in fresh funding to scale its sustainable energy solutions for smallholder farmers globally.

The funding round, led by ElectriFI and supported by existing investors such as Chroma Impact Investment and KawiSafi Ventures, will enable the company to expand its operations into new markets and advance its regenerative agricultural solutions.

Sistema.bio’s biodigesters, which convert animal waste into clean energy and biofertiliser, are already installed in over 12,000 farms across 31 countries. The company, which operates in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Nigeria, has positively impacted over 100,000 smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.

The company has also partnered with Engie Access to introduce its biogas digesters in Zambia and Mozambique, supporting its mission to increase energy access in rural areas and boost farmers’ productivity through renewable energy solutions.

By reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable farming practices, Sistema.bio aims to empower one million farmers by 2025 and cut 1% of global emissions by 2030.

CEO Alexander Eaton highlighted the company’s commitment to decarbonising agriculture and helping farmers adapt to climate change. The $15 million raised builds on the momentum of its Series B funding in 2022, positioning Sistema.bio for further expansion in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

As global efforts to combat climate change accelerate, this investment reinforces confidence in Sistema.bio’s capacity to deliver transformative impacts on sustainable farming and renewable energy for smallholder farmers.

With operations across three continents, Sistema.bio is set to play a key role in promoting climate resilience and energy access, particularly in Africa, where smallholder farmers are crucial to food security and environmental sustainability.
