Cybersecurity firms are warning organisations about the growing risks associated with privileged access as businesses increasingly adopt artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and automated systems. The warning highlights the need for stronger identity management and access controls to prevent unauthorised users, compromised accounts and malicious applications from gaining access to sensitive corporate information and critical digital infrastructure.

Cybersecurity companies BluDive and Delinea have highlighted the importance of strengthening privileged access management as organisations expand their use of AI powered tools and interconnected digital platforms. Privileged accounts, which grant users or systems elevated permissions to access sensitive information, modify configurations or control critical infrastructure, are particularly attractive targets for cybercriminals. If compromised, these accounts can allow attackers to bypass ordinary security restrictions, steal confidential data or disrupt business operations.

The growing integration of AI introduces additional security challenges because automated agents may require access to databases, applications and internal systems to perform assigned tasks. Without appropriate restrictions, monitoring and authentication, an AI agent operating with excessive permissions could expose sensitive information or execute unintended actions. Security experts therefore recommend limiting access to what each user or system genuinely requires, protecting privileged credentials, monitoring suspicious activities and reviewing permissions regularly. Organisations must also ensure that AI systems are subject to clear accountability and human oversight.

For Nigerian businesses, particularly financial technology companies, banks, telecommunications operators and public institutions handling sensitive information, these risks reinforce the importance of treating cybersecurity as a central part of digital transformation. Organisations should establish clear policies governing AI access to corporate systems, conduct regular security assessments and train employees to recognise emerging threats. As AI becomes more deeply embedded in business operations, effective privileged access management will be essential to protecting customer information, maintaining service reliability and sustaining public confidence in digital services.
