Moniepoint has brought together senior engineering practitioners from Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem to examine the challenges of building and operating financial technology infrastructure at scale. The inaugural Moniepoint Off the Record Engineering Mixer, held recently in Lagos, provided a platform for technical leaders to exchange experiences on scaling fintech systems and improving the resilience of digital payment infrastructure.

The event attracted senior engineers from fintech companies including Flutterwave, Cowrywise and Nomba, with discussions focusing on distributed systems and payment infrastructure. Participants examined issues including system failures, network dependencies, architectural trade offs, observability, security and approaches to designing systems capable of withstanding operational failures.

Speaking on the engineering approach, Engineering Manager, Card Payments at Moniepoint, Ayomide Kolawole, said reliable payment infrastructure requires engineers to understand the different points at which transactions can fail and design appropriate responses. He said the objective should go beyond processing transactions quickly to ensuring that customers are not made to bear the consequences when failures occur within payment systems.

Moniepoint said its card payments infrastructure processes tens of millions of transactions daily and incorporates mechanisms for responding differently depending on the certainty of a transaction’s outcome. The company said its systems monitor the health of individual issuing banks across processors, while architectural approaches such as sharding, asynchronous processing and service decomposition were also discussed at the engineering forum as possible approaches to building more resilient fintech infrastructure.
