The National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, has inaugurated the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative Implementation Taskforce, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s ambition to move from developing its sovereign cloud framework to actual implementation. The taskforce is expected to coordinate government agencies, regulators and private sector stakeholders in strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, protecting critical digital assets and expanding the country’s domestic cloud and data centre capacity.
The National Sovereign Cloud Initiative is designed to give Nigeria greater control over critical data and digital infrastructure while creating an environment capable of attracting private investment and encouraging indigenous technological capacity. NITDA said the initiative will support cloud adoption, data governance, infrastructure assurance and technical standards, while allowing Nigeria to continue benefiting from global technology and international investment.
According to NITDA, one of the immediate priorities of the taskforce is to help financial institutions prepare for the Central Bank of Nigeria’s January 1, 2027 deadline for compliance with its cloud requirements. The agency also plans to establish an end to end certification system for cloud infrastructure providers, cloud service providers and system integrators, alongside a portal expected to list certified providers. The system is intended to give regulators and institutions greater confidence that critical workloads and sovereign data are being handled in accordance with approved standards.
Beyond regulatory compliance, the Federal Government expects the sovereign cloud programme to stimulate investment in cloud infrastructure, data centres and connectivity while creating new opportunities for Nigerian technology professionals. NITDA said stronger domestic infrastructure would improve resilience, reduce dependence on foreign digital systems and support sectors such as finance, healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing. The inauguration of the taskforce therefore signals the beginning of a more coordinated implementation phase aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital sovereignty and positioning the country as a competitive destination for cloud and digital infrastructure investment.
