The National Information Technology Development Agency has issued a nationwide cybersecurity advisory warning Nigerians about a critical vulnerability affecting the popular video conferencing application, Zoom. The agency urged individuals, businesses, educational institutions, and government organisations to update their software immediately to reduce exposure to potential cyber attacks.
According to the advisory, the identified flaw could allow attackers to compromise user accounts or gain unauthorised access during virtual meetings if outdated versions of the application remain in use. Although Zoom has released security patches, many users are yet to install the latest updates, creating a significant security risk.
NITDA explained that cybercriminals increasingly exploit widely used communication platforms because they serve millions of users across different sectors. As remote work, online learning, and digital collaboration continue to expand in Nigeria, protecting virtual communication channels has become a national cybersecurity priority.
The agency advised users to enable multi factor authentication, avoid joining meetings through suspicious links, update passwords regularly, and ensure that meeting hosts activate available security features before conducting sensitive discussions. These measures, it said, significantly reduce the likelihood of unauthorised access.
The latest warning reflects NITDA’s broader commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s cyber resilience through public awareness, digital safety education, and proactive responses to emerging global cybersecurity threats affecting Nigerian internet users.
