Fidelity Bank Plc has warned customers about the growing threat of Remote Access Trojan (RAT) malware attacks, where fraudsters disguise malicious software as legitimate mobile applications to gain control of users’ devices and steal banking information. The bank said criminals are using fake adverts, pop-up messages and fraudulent links shared through social media, websites and messaging platforms to trick users into installing harmful applications.
According to the bank, RAT malware can allow attackers to remotely monitor devices, steal banking credentials, intercept one-time passwords (OTPs), track user activities and conduct unauthorised transactions. The malware is often disguised as popular applications such as betting platforms, streaming services, device optimisation tools, fake banking support apps and fraudulent system updates.
Fidelity Bank advised customers to download applications only from official app stores, verify app developers before installation, avoid suspicious links, protect banking credentials and regularly review installed applications for unusual activity. Customers who suspect their devices have been compromised were advised to disconnect from the internet immediately and contact the bank through its support channels.
The warning comes amid evolving cyber fraud threats in Nigeria’s digital payment ecosystem. Although Nigeria recorded a 51 per cent decline in electronic payment fraud losses in 2025, industry experts say criminals are increasingly shifting attacks from financial institutions to individual users through phishing, SIM swaps, social engineering and malware targeting personal devices. Fidelity Bank said greater customer awareness and stronger digital security practices remain critical to protecting the country’s expanding digital finance ecosystem.
