A Zimbabwean software developer, Courage Nyoni, has gained international recognition after creating a mobile application that digitally recreates the traditional Lobola marriage negotiation process. The self taught programmer developed the app during the COVID 19 lockdown as part of his coding journey, and it has since attracted users across Southern Africa, Europe and Japan, where it was recently featured on national television.
Known as the Lobola Calculator, the Android app allows users to answer culturally inspired questions before generating a fictional bride price based on traditional customs. Nyoni said the application was designed as an educational and entertaining tool rather than a replacement for the customary marriage practice, adding that he consulted community elders to ensure it reflected real cultural considerations while preserving the significance of the tradition.
The success of the app highlights a growing trend among African developers who are building digital products rooted in local cultures, languages and traditions. From indigenous language learning platforms to genealogy services and cultural preservation tools, software developers are increasingly creating solutions that showcase Africa’s unique heritage while serving both local and international audiences.
Nyoni believes African traditions present significant opportunities for innovation and digital entrepreneurship. He said future projects could include platforms that modernise community savings schemes and preserve African folklore, stressing that technology should be used to preserve cultural heritage rather than replace it. He added that the experience has shown how locally inspired innovations can find global relevance while promoting greater understanding of African traditions.
