Decentralised social networking platform Mastodon has introduced a major redesign of its user profile interface, as part of broader efforts to attract mainstream users and improve usability. The update, announced on Thursday, focuses on simplifying how profiles appear and function, with the aim of making the platform more accessible to both individuals and organisations seeking alternatives to conventional social media platforms.
Built on the ActivityPub protocol, Mastodon gained prominence following the acquisition of Twitter, now known as X, by Elon Musk, which triggered a wave of user migration. Despite its appeal as a decentralised network where no single entity controls user data or algorithms, the platform has struggled with adoption challenges, largely due to its complex onboarding process and unfamiliar structure, including server selection and multiple timelines.
In response, Mastodon has rolled out a series of changes designed to streamline the user experience. Central to the update is a redesigned profile layout featuring a single “Activity” tab with customisable viewing options, replacing the previous dual tab system. Users can now filter posts using hashtags displayed prominently, while pinned posts have been simplified to highlight one featured item with an option to view others. Additional improvements include clearer explanations of Mastodon’s unique handle format, enhanced profile customisation options, and the ability to manage profile settings from a single interface.
The overhaul also introduces visual and functional refinements aimed at reducing clutter and improving navigation, alongside expanded mobile editing capabilities for profile fields and media. Features such as link verification have been made more accessible, reinforcing trust without centralised control. The update is expected to roll out gradually, starting with select servers ahead of a wider release tied to the upcoming Mastodon 4.6 software update, as the platform positions itself for renewed growth in an increasingly competitive social media landscape.
