Despite the billions of naira invested in the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the INEC Result Viewing Portal, experts say Nigeria’s electoral process still faces a crisis of public trust. At a high level discussion hosted on X Space by the Stakeholders in Blockchain Technology Association of Nigeria, technology professionals argued that the next step for the country is the adoption of blockchain technology to ensure secure and transparent transmission of election results.

Speaking during the session, the Chief Executive Officer of Alpha Geek Technologies, Oluwaseun Dania, said blockchain could help restore public confidence in elections by protecting the integrity of votes. According to him, the technology would allow election results to be recorded in a way that cannot be altered, making them visible and verifiable by anyone around the world.

Another participant, the Chief Executive Officer of Egoras Technology, Harry Ugorji, explained that the process could involve scanning election result sheets and using artificial intelligence to extract the data before sending it to a blockchain system. He noted that storing the information through the InterPlanetary File System would ensure that the uploaded results remain permanently accessible and cannot be tampered with.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission said the commission is already improving digital processes through the Continuous Voter Registration system. Officials explained that the platform allows Nigerians to begin registration or update their personal details online before completing biometric capture at designated centres, a move aimed at reducing errors and improving the accuracy of the voter register. Experts at the event also recommended testing blockchain in smaller elections such as student union polls and party primaries before any nationwide deployment.
