PayPal has unveiled a new global payment platform, PayPal World, designed to facilitate seamless cross-border transactions for consumers and businesses. Announced on Wednesday, the platform will connect PayPal with major local payment systems, enhancing interoperability and expanding the reach of digital payments globally.
A key feature of the initiative is the integration of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which currently handles around 85% of the country’s retail digital transactions. Other launch partners include Brazil’s Mercado Pago, Tencent’s Tenpay Global, and Venmo. PayPal said the platform aims to simplify international transactions by enabling direct links between regional payment networks and its own infrastructure.
Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International Payments Limited, hailed the integration of UPI as a milestone that will significantly extend its global presence. India has also been in discussions with nations in Africa and South America to export UPI’s digital payments framework as a model for building their own systems.
Set to go live later this year, PayPal World will initially support these key partners but is expected to onboard additional players over time. The platform marks PayPal’s strategic push to become a central hub for global digital commerce by bridging the gap between regional systems and international markets.
