Tizeti, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and Galaxy Backbone, has launched a Fiber-to-Hostel broadband initiative at the University of Lagos and the University of Abuja. The project delivers high-speed fiber-optic internet directly into student hostels, providing students with faster access to learning resources, virtual classrooms, and online collaboration tools.
The initiative is part of a national agenda led by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, to strengthen digital infrastructure across Nigerian tertiary institutions. According to Tizeti’s Chief Marketing Officer, Temitope Osunrinde, the project is a significant step towards expanding digital access to students and supporting academic innovation. Students at the launch reportedly experienced internet speeds ranging between 50 Mbps and 200 Mbps.
Chief Executive Officer of Tizeti, Kendall Ananyi, noted that the initiative aligns with the global Triple Helix model by fostering collaboration among government, academia, and industry. He stated that with the support of Galaxy Backbone and other stakeholders, the internet service would serve as a foundation for research, innovation, and global engagement for Nigerian students. He added that reliable internet connectivity should no longer be considered a luxury on campuses.
Dignitaries present at the launch included the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa; Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola; Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Patricia Monko Lar; and Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju.
The officials commended the project’s potential to transform academic experiences. Tizeti, which has previously connected millions of Nigerians through partnerships with Facebook, Microsoft, and USAID, recently launched its fastest broadband service, offering speeds up to 1 Gbps to support homes, businesses, and academic institutions.
