Meta’s Vice President of AI Research, Joelle Pineau, has announced her decision to leave the tech giant at the end of May, marking the end of an eight-year tenure that significantly shaped the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) advancements.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Pineau described her experience at Meta as “the professional experience of a lifetime,” expressing deep gratitude for the teams she worked with throughout her journey.
Her departure comes at a critical period for Meta, which is aggressively expanding its AI frontiers. The company has pledged a staggering $65 billion investment in AI infrastructure for 2025, including plans for a colossal data centre and the development of Llama 4, its next-generation AI model.
Since joining Meta in 2017, Pineau has played a pivotal role in advancing the company’s AI research. She was instrumental in the development of some of Meta’s most widely adopted AI tools, including PyTorch, FAISS, RoBERTa, DINO, Llama, SAM, and Codegen. These innovations have not only powered Meta’s AI vision but have also left a lasting impact on the broader research community.
Meta’s AI research arm, Fundamental AI Research (FAIR), has witnessed structural shifts in recent years. In a strategic move, the division was placed under the oversight of Meta’s Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, aligning AI research with the company’s commercial products.
Reflecting on her journey, Pineau acknowledged her mentors and managers, stating, “I have nothing but admiration and deep gratitude for each of my managers during my time at Meta—Michael Schroepfer, Jerome Pesenti, Michael Abrash, Chris Cox. Each of them generously took me under their wing, provided context, advice, support, cover, feedback, sponsorship—and an inspiring model of leadership, each in their own way.”
As Meta searches for a successor, Pineau has indicated her intention to take a break before embarking on her next professional chapter. “My last day will be May 30. After that, I will be taking some time to observe and to reflect before jumping into a new adventure,” she noted.
With Pineau’s exit, Meta’s AI research unit will continue its ambitious drive without one of its key architects.
