The Nigerian Navy has received a boost in its aerial operations with the addition of three Agusta Westland 109 Trekker helicopters, procured by the Ministry of Defence.

The helicopters were officially handed over to the Navy in a brief ceremony held in Lagos on November 12, 2024. The Director of Naval Information, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, shared details of the handover in a statement on Wednesday.

During the ceremony, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, was joined by senior naval officers as he formally took delivery of the helicopters. Expressing his gratitude, Ogalla thanked President Bola Tinubu for his steadfast support of the armed forces, along with the Ministers of Defence, Abubakar Badaru and Bello Matawelle, for their role in acquiring the helicopters.

Vice Admiral Ogalla highlighted the impact of the new aircraft on the Navy’s capabilities, noting that the helicopters will enhance key operations, including aerial reconnaissance, search and rescue missions, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and air insertion for special operations. The Navy’s operational flexibility is expected to improve significantly with these versatile additions.

Commodore Adams-Aliu provided insight into the helicopters’ technical features, noting their VIP-configured cabins with noise attenuation for optimal passenger comfort. Designed with a landing skid rather than wheels, the AW 109 Trekker offers improved loading capacity, catering to various mission demands.

The helicopters are also equipped with auxiliary fuel tanks, which enable extended flight endurance of up to 3 hours and 40 minutes, making them ideal for long-range transport missions. Adams-Aliu mentioned that the helicopters could be retrofitted with specific mission equipment, allowing them to be tailored to meet diverse operational requirements.

This latest acquisition demonstrates the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to enhancing its operational readiness and air support capabilities, ensuring it can respond effectively to security challenges in both national and regional waters.
