Warner Music Group (WMG) has reached a settlement with AI music startup Udio, resolving a copyright infringement dispute and paving the way for a long-term partnership. As part of the agreement, both companies will collaborate on a new AI-powered music creation service scheduled to launch in 2026. WMG says the forthcoming platform will be trained exclusively on licensed and authorized music, ensuring that artists’ works are used responsibly and ethically.
According to WMG, the new subscription-based service will allow users to create remixes, covers, and original songs featuring the voices and compositions of participating artists and songwriters. A key feature of the platform is its built-in system for crediting and compensating creators, which the company says will open up new revenue opportunities while maintaining strong protections for intellectual property. WMG CEO Robert Kyncl emphasized that the partnership reflects the label’s commitment to safeguarding artists’ rights while exploring the creative possibilities unlocked by AI.
Udio’s CEO Andrew Sanchez described the collaboration as a step toward a future where technology enhances artistic expression rather than undermines it. He said the upcoming platform is designed to let fans create alongside their favorite artists in a controlled environment that prioritizes creator choice and transparency. The partnership signals a shift in how major music labels engage with AI companies, moving from litigation toward structured licensing and collaboration.
The settlement comes as the broader music industry is reassessing its relationship with generative AI. WMG, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment had previously sued Udio and rival platform Suno over unauthorized training on copyrighted material. But with both Udio and Suno now engaged in licensing discussions and Suno securing a $250 million Series C round at a $2.45 billion valuation investor and industry confidence in AI music technology is clearly accelerating, even as legal frameworks continue to evolve
