TikTok has introduced a fresh wave of user-focused features aimed at giving people more control over the content they see on the platform. The updates—announced this week—include tools like “Manage Topics,” “Smart Keyword Filtering,” and a comprehensive guide to how the For You feed operates, enhancing how users discover interests, creators, and communities globally, including in Nigeria.
The For You feed remains central to the TikTok experience, helping creators like Anchi Vibes and Charityekezie connect with diverse audiences. From behind-the-scenes content on Nigerian Idol to humorous videos tackling African stereotypes, these creators thrive on content discovery. The new tools are designed to deepen such engagement by allowing users to shape what they see according to evolving interests, while also promoting safe and inclusive interactions.
“Manage Topics” enables users to adjust how frequently they see content from popular categories like Travel, Nature, and Sports. While not removing topics entirely, the tool lets users fine-tune their recommendations. The upgraded “Smart Keyword Filter” goes further, incorporating synonyms and related terms, building on a feature that’s already been used over 190 million times worldwide. In addition, an educational guide will demystify how the For You feed functions, including insights into why certain videos are recommended and how to tailor preferences.
According to Adam Presser, Head of Operations & Trust & Safety at TikTok, the For You feed is a critical growth engine for both users and creators. The new features—available for teen and adult accounts—build on existing safeguards, such as content eligibility standards, “not interested” controls, Restricted Mode, and tools to prevent repetitive exposure to potentially problematic content. With these updates, TikTok aims to empower Nigerian users to explore, learn, and engage meaningfully in a digitally personalised environment.
